El Kalamar en su tinta
El kalamar en su tinta
did you know that in Cuba there were some state's musicians ? Me frankly, before knowing "El Kalamar en su tinta" I didn't ! But It's the case for David, Gordis and Yolan the three Percussionists and singers of this "Electro-Cubano band.
When Boris Sarcey their french producer talked to me about what he was recording during is visits in Cuba, I was expecting a Salsa more conventional. But I should have been aware that with his previous works, from Ubik, Tobo to Étienne Daho, and with his love for people like Timmy Thomas and Massive Attack that the guy was more to give an electric spicy sauce with his Kalamar recipe.
Of course back to France it was time to find a record company to make a deal for them. But despite the numerous great feed back he had from the "normal" records companies, the question alway comin' on their lips was "is the band allowed to come and play on stage and above all… when"?! And if it's true like Manu Chao said that it's better to be poor in Cuba than in New York, Paris or London, we must admit that it's still not that easy for the citizens of the Caribbean island to travel that freely. But Cuba is not only Guantanamo even though the band lives in that suburb of Cuba!
For "Wild Wild Rennes" this difficulty was more like an asset. Let's explain: it's a challenge for us : "You love them; well Ok so let us do a big success with them, big enough to make them come here; let their music be a real passport for them !"
For this production Boris add some great musicians skills from the Paris area; people like David Lewis the english trumpet player from Arthur H and Paris Combo and Jean Labbe , sound engineer of famous french band la Mano Negra for the technical part. Let's not forget the delicious Mme Éliane as executive producer of this "Loco" project !
